How can I dispose of drugs safely?

Expired and unused drugs can sometimes be left in the medicine cabinet, opening the door to potential misuse and even abuse. It is therefore important not to consume drugs once the expiration date on the packaging has passed.

Consumers and patients must dispose of their medicines in a way that is safe for both public health and the environment. Avoid disposing of expired drugs in the trash, toilet or sink. In general, you can bring the following back to your pharmacy:

  • prescription drugs
  • over-the-counter drugs
  • natural health products

For more information on safe drug disposal and drug recovery programs, visit the Health Canada website.

What are side effects or adverse events?

A side effect is considered to be any undesirable medical event occurring in a patient who has used a certain pharmaceutical product, whether or not that effect is the result of treatment with the product in question. A side effect is therefore any unfavorable and unintended sign, symptom or illness associated with the use of the product.

What are side effects or adverse events? When you report side effects or adverse reactions associated with the use of drugs and pharmaceutical products, you help us ensure the safety of the products in question and the patients who use them.
